Mahindra has launched a new downsized 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine for the new generation Scorpio and new age XUV500 in Delhi and National Capital Region. This relieves the company from the ongoing diesel car ban in Delhi and allows it to commence with sales of the aforementioned SUVs there.
The Delhi Government had recently announced that diesel passenger vehicles with capacities more than 2.0-litres will be banned. This was due to the rising air pollution conditions in the city which made it the most polluted city in the world. This move affected manufacturers like Mahindra and Toyota which have a major presence in these areas. In order to negate this situation there were rumours that Mahindra is developing an all new engine that will comply with the new norms. The SUV manufacturer has finally launched an all new 1.99-litre engine that will power both the Sorpio and XUV500.
The new engine from Mahindra belongs to the same mHawk engine family and will produce 120BHP and 140BHP in the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively. This means that the new downsized engine has not come at the cost of reduced power output which is excellent news. Speaking on this occasion, Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said, “This new engine, the development of which started in August 2014, is now ready for launch on both the New Generation Scorpio and the New Age XUV500. We do hope that our customers would enjoy driving these vehicles which deliver the performance of our currently on offer 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines.”
The new diesel engine lineup will be initially offered only in Delhi and NCR followed by other cities in the country. The new variants will be displayed at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. Stay tuned to the ICB network for more launch related news of the two Mahindra SUVs.
