£100K Garage: Fetchez la vache
A strong lightweight theme for this PHer's garage, with luxury provided by a Range Rover and Maserati
Name : Fetchez la vache
Previously owned : GP Mk1 Beach Buggy (Volkswagen Beetle based with a tuned engine; loud), Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000, Peugeot 205 GTI, Land Rover Discovery 3, Volkswagen Campervan (air-cooled obviously).
Currently owned : I have had to sell anything vaguely 'PH' due to a house renovation, so am kicking about in a Seat Alhambra diesel (funny how a map can make these things actually quite interesting) and the wife is about to get a Fiat 500. Hopefully once the work is done I'll get something interesting again
On the shortlist: TVR Sagaris, Porsche 964 Targa, Volkswagen Beetle, BMW Z4M, Fiat 500 Abarth, Mazda MX-5 turbo, Audi RS2, Subaru Impreza 22B and a Jenson Interceptor.
Caterham 7 620R
Cost : £52,950
Balance : £47,050
Why I chose it : "On the back of the Extreme Caterhams thread, half of my budget goes on this Gulf liveried beauty. I'll be honest - I've always wanted an HPC, but this one will have to do. A Caterham 7 was always going to be the first car on my list, as it's top of the 'cars I always promised myself'. I still have the brochure for the HPC (in its original envelope with Caterham postal franking) that I sent off for while at school. In my experience nothing comes close to the raw excitement of a decent Caterham, and proves you don't need to be at silly speeds to have fun. This one would have no problems in attaining silly speeds, however."
Lotus Exige S1
Cost : £24,995
Balance : £22,095
Why I chose it : "Keeping it light, but one with a roof. I've driven plenty of Elises but never an Exige. This one looks quick enough, and another car on my long term wish list." [Unfortunately this Exige was sold and no others are available in the classifieds - NA]
Cost : £19,900
Balance : £2,155
Why I chose it : "In my eyes these are fabulous machines. My ears love them as well. Just hearing these start up is enough to make me want one. Not for caning, but going from A to B in style. I don't want to think about the running costs. Two decades ago running costs put me off buying a Quattroporte, so nothing has really changed."
Range Rover SE
Cost : £1,995
Balance : £160
Why I chose it : "I wanted a Defender, but with only £2,000 left I still need something for bringing my dogs back from the beach covered in sea, sand, poo and the occasional remnants of dead seal intestines. The Quattroporte won't really cut the mustard here and this would fit the bill nicely. The remainder will be spent on new sunglasses and petrol."
