Volkswagen has recalled the 2012-2014 Passat TDI to fix a wiring problem that poses a fire risk.
Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggest the defect was first identified after a production plant reported overheated electrical connectors and "isolated underbody vehicle fires." Investigators determined that an underbody sensor may allow water to corrode electrical terminals, resulting in a short and possible overheating condition.
"In rare cases, overheating of the electrical connection could result in a fire underneath the vehicle," the filing warns.
Service technicians will inspect the connector and replace faulty components to prevent future failures.
Affecting around 91,000 units in the US market, the recall is unrelated to the diesel emissions scandal. VW has not yet announced an expected refit program for many of its US TDI vehicles that violate federal emissions regulations.
