BMW has confirmed plans to develop a new ultra-luxury flagship to slot above the current 7-Series.
The brand's most expensive sedan currently tops out not far into the six-figure price range. BMW's Rolls-Royce division accommodates customers looking for a more expensive and luxurious ride, but its least-expensive model still starts at nearly $300,000.
"Just like certain competitors, we will see that we occupy with credible offers the price bracket of 150,000 euros (~$169,000 USD) and beyond," said BMW development head Klaus Froehlich, as quoted by Automotive News .
The 'certain competitors' presumably include the Mercedes-Maybach S600, which commands around $170,000.
In a likely jab at Mercedes-Benz, Froehlich suggests BMW won't simply offer several stretched wheelbases and "varyingly thick chrome packages." He did not elaborate on BMW's approach, though the company is known for focusing on handling and driving dynamics across its entire range.
Introduced in 2014, BMW's Vision Future Luxuryconcept (pictured) shows a potential design direction for a pricier flagship car. It was presented as a design study, with suicide doors and a futuristic luxurious interior.
Separate rumors have suggested BMW may launch several new models above the 7-Series, potentially including both a coupe and sedan that may revive the 8-Series nameplate and inaugurate the 9-Series.
